The incidence of lymphomas is unusually high in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients. Because cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTL) represent a major mechanism of the antitumoral immune response in immunocompetent individuals, we asked wheter intratumoral activation of CTL was impaired in acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) lymphomas.

Il tenta d'infecter par des bactéries des personnes souffrant de cancer et mit au point un vaccin, composé de bactéries tuées, capable d'induire une réaction immunitaire antitumorale. Ces traitements immunothérapeutiques (ils luttent contre la maladie en utilisant les défenses de l'organisme) ont été efficaces chez certains individus, mais l'incohérence des résultats a restreint leur utilisation.
